February End of Month Meeting

Dianne’s latest rug!
Despite the snowy blowy weather this morning, we had a great turn out of folks to our monthly business meeting.  There were lots of lovely projects underway and completed. Here are 2 from Lynda:

Karen Kaiser also made it through the snow, and was visited by several folks interested in her wares. She also brought along these samples of kits she’s working on....don’t they look lovely?

We talked about the Paula Laverty talk on Grenfell rugs, coming to Cobourg on April 28. We’re working on buying some blocks of tickets.

Also up for discussion was our future Hook-In and Regional East Workshops, set for September 30 this year. Details will be released in the very near future....but this was an opportunity for our members to register for some of the workshops ahead of time. We also showed off the T-shirts we’ve made as samples so far. Available to our group will be the decals used to create the shirts.  We’re hoping that a number of our volunteers will purchase the decals to add to their own T-shirts.  Cost is $4 - let me know if you’re interested.

There’s Still Time!

Judy Cross with her latest completed project
Yes.....if you want to clean your rugs in snow, we have plenty of material to work with, tho this weekend’s predicted thaw may reduce our supply of snow. ...but more is expected next week.

Here are some instructions based on a 2009 Rug Hooking Magazine article by Angela Possak.

Pick a day with powdery new snow, if you can. Slushy snow won’t work as well for this process. Start with a cold rug....let it sit somewhere cold for a few hours. Makes sense, as you don’t want the snow to melt on contact with the rug.

Cover the cold rug with a thin layer of snow and work it around with a broom or brush. You’re not going to remove stains with this method, but you will pickup dust and dirt and generally freshen your rug.  Repeat until you’re safisified with the result.  Shake off the excess snow and head indoors.

The completed rug will be damp-ish, so lay it on a drying rack overnight. Vacuum the rug the next day, and you’re done!

Paula Laverty (from connectnlc.ca)

Here’s a description of Paula’s talk from the Learning Connection website:
When Wilfred Grenfell set up his medical mission on the coast of Labrador, he included “industries” for fishermen’s wives. The best known is the now much sought after silk stocking hooked mats. Paula Laverty, leading world authority on the Grenfell Mission mats, talks about them, their makers and old Labrador. Bring your Grenfell mats for Paula Laverty’s opinion.  Sponsored by: Williams Academy
Paula’s website is a gold mine of info and photos - go here to check it out.

Jillian's Work On Display

Our very own Jillian Roos-Markowitz is having a show of her works, at Edward Jones Investments located at 3 King Street West in Cobourg (next to TD Bank), with the opening taking place this coming Saturday Feb 9 from 2-4 pm.  It will be in place until the end of March.  Please drop by when you have a moment.

More info and photos can be found on Facebook.

As we all know Jillian is highly talented, and has transformed one of her paintings into a rug hooking, all in silk!  Rug hooking is just one of many media she uses.

Here are some more examples of her work that will be on display.
